Dental Crowns

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are custom-made caps designed to cover and protect damaged, decayed, or aesthetically unpleasing teeth.

They are crafted from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of materials, and are shaped to match the natural contour of your teeth.

At GP Dental Marion in Adelaide, we provide high-quality dental crowns that restore the functionality and appearance of your smile.

Our team will work with you to choose the best material for your needs and ensure a comfortable, natural fit.

How Does CEREC Work?

The process begins with a digital scan of your tooth, using advanced 3D imaging technology that captures detailed information about the tooth’s shape, size, and structure. This eliminates the need for traditional moulds, making the experience more comfortable and efficient.

Next, the CEREC software allows us to design a custom restoration that fits perfectly with your natural teeth. The design is then sent to an in-house milling machine that precisely carves the restoration from a high-quality ceramic block. Once completed, the restoration is polished, adjusted as needed, and bonded securely to your tooth.

The CEREC process involves several key steps:

  1. Digital Imaging: Using a special intraoral camera, we take detailed digital impressions of your teeth. This eliminates the need for messy traditional impressions and provides highly accurate images for precise restorations.
  2. Computer-Aided Design: The digital impressions are transferred to a computer, where advanced CAD software is used to design your custom restoration. This allows for exact specifications to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth.
  3. In-House Milling: Once the design is complete, the data is sent to our on-site milling machine. The machine fabricates the restoration from a solid block of high-quality ceramic material. This process typically takes about 15-20 minutes.
  4. Fitting and Bonding: After the restoration is milled, we will check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and then bond it to your tooth using a strong dental adhesive. The restoration is polished to match the natural sheen of your teeth, resulting in a seamless and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Why Might You Need a Dental Crown?

You might need a dental crown for several reasons:

  • To Protect a Weakened Tooth: Teeth that have been weakened by decay or large fillings can be reinforced with a crown to prevent further damage or fractures.
  • To Restore a Broken or Worn-Down Tooth: Crowns can restore the shape, size, and function of teeth that have been significantly worn down or broken.
  • To Cover and Support a Tooth with a Large Filling: When a tooth has more filling than natural tooth structure, a crown can provide the necessary support.
  • To Hold a Dental Bridge in Place: Crowns can be used to anchor a dental bridge, filling the gap left by one or more missing teeth.
  • To Improve the Appearance of Teeth: Crowns can enhance the look of discolored, misshapen, or aesthetically compromised teeth.
  • To Cover a Dental Implant: Crowns are placed on dental implants to replace missing teeth, providing a natural look and function.

frequently asked dental crown questions

Below our the questions and answers we get asked the most about dental crowns in our Adelaide dental clinic.

Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a combination of these. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are popular for their natural appearance and are often used for front teeth. Metal crowns, such as those made from gold or base-metal alloys, are extremely durable and are typically used for molars. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer a balance of strength and aesthetics. The best material for your crown will depend on factors such as the location of the tooth, your bite, and your aesthetic preferences, which our dentists at GP Dental Marion can help you determine.

With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns can last between 10 to 15 years or even longer. Factors that influence the longevity of a crown include the material used, the placement in the mouth, your oral hygiene practices, and habits such as teeth grinding or biting hard objects. Regular dental check-ups at GP Dental Marion are essential to monitor the condition of your crown and ensure its longevity.

The process of getting a dental crown is generally not painful, as it is performed under local anesthesia to numb the affected area. You might experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity after the procedure, especially if the tooth was severely damaged or if you received a temporary crown. This discomfort typically subsides within a few days. Our dental team at GP Dental Marion will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to manage any post-procedure discomfort.

While the crown itself cannot develop a cavity, the underlying tooth structure can still be susceptible to decay, especially at the margin where the crown meets the tooth. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, and attending routine dental check-ups are crucial in preventing decay around the crown. Our dentists at GP Dental Marion will monitor the health of your crowned tooth during your visits.

Caring for a dental crown involves maintaining excellent oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily to remove plaque from around the crown, and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash. Avoid biting on hard objects, such as ice or pens, which can damage the crown. Regular dental visits to GP Dental Marion are important to check the condition of your crown and overall oral health. Additionally, if you have habits such as teeth grinding, consider using a night guard to protect your crown and natural teeth.
